Foliage:Densely tufted perennial herb spreading from short thick underground stems. Flowering stems rigid, triangular. 5-10 bracts at base of flowerhead, 5-15cm long.
Flowers:Brown to coppery branched flowerheads with 6-10 primary branches to 20 cm long, divided into dense, oval to cylindric spikes 1-3 cm long. Many rounded or flattened 4-10-flowered spikelets; stem within spikelet broadly winged, October-February.
General
Comments:

A spreading sedge for low moist sites in gardens and beside water areas. Food plant for caterpillars, also a habitat for frogs.

Likes moist swampy soils and edges of streams which may dry out in summer. Full sun, semi shade to full shade.
